recreating the past (for Mum)

26 Jun

To celebrate our Mum’s birthday next week, my brothers and I had a go at a wee photo project yesterday. We each chose a childhood photograph of ourselves and recreated it as pierced, tattooed, much-less-cute adults. What you have to understand is our Mum is mad for photos – there are so many frames covering the walls in her home that she has honestly considered moving house for more wall space (read: photo space). Just last week Mum was telling Zanne and I that she updated the photos pinned to her fridge and the process left her feeling loss for the photos no longer there. She went on to say how she often finds herself distracted by the photos hanging in her hallway: she gets caught up in the memories of particular moments, reflects on what was and what is now. Some of said photos are over 20 years old, I wonder how many times they’ve made Mum smile (now that’s priceless!). Mum’s photo obsession is well known, so the boys and I know we’ve hit a home run with this birthday gift. In fact, the boys both tell me that “Mum is going to pee her pants”. Pretty sure she’ll cry before she loses control of her bladder, but whatevs.

Zanne and I bought most of the clothes/props from charity stores yesterday morning, we tried to get everything to match the original photo as close as possible. Unfortunately, it was a bit difficult to find the exact same shirt for Kris but his photo is near enough I think. We had a blast taking the photos, there was constant giggling throughout. The funny thing is that Steven is the only one who remembers his original photo being taken, but we’ve all seen the photos so many times that they’ve become family icons. We’re all busting for Mum’s birthday now, we can’t wait to see her reaction. We’ll get photos of that for sure!

So what do think? A cool project?

What a cool project…do you think she will hang the photos together? Our family did a similar (not nearly as clever) thing. We were all gathered for the occassion of mum and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary and took a family photo (including grandchildren) on the occasion of mum and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary..and recreated the photo (got everyone in the same spot) for mum’s 80th birthday..sadly our dad had died a few years before..Mum loved those photos and they always had pride of place in the hall. Can’t wait to hear your mum’s response to such a great, inventive gift.

As always, we’re on the same vibe Dor 🙂
I’m fairly sure Mum will hang all the frames together. Zanne is certain that Mum will invite people over just so she can show them the photos, and I’m inclined to agree with her!
